While the nearby nation of Austria has recently attracted many of the tourists that usually visit ski resorts in Germany, there are still many areas of Germany that offer incredibly beautiful scenery and five-star ski resorts at a fraction of the price of the recently developed Tyrolean resorts of Austria. Perhaps the best place to find the top ski holiday attractions in Germany would be the Berlin area. Altenburg, runs along the the Czechoslovakia border and is located just outside of Berlin, offering some of the most enjoyable cross-country skiing in Germany.
The Garmisch area is one of the most renowned skiing areas located along the Bavarian Alps, being located at the foot of Zugspitze , the highest peak in Germany. Although Garmisch was home to the 1972 Summer Olympics, the area is well known for winter recreation, from snowboarding to skiing and ice skating. The second most popular ski area in Germany is Oberstdorf, which is located within close distance to Munich, Stuttgart, and Lake Constance. Oberstdorf is regularly home to ski jumping competitions and winter sports events of all kinds. In fact, many people believe that this area offers the most diverse terrain and skiing opportunities in all of Germany.
