During the last school holidays, my five friends and I decided to hike up Penang Hill.
My brother Ramm and I met up with our friends Brandon, Zaim and Joel at the Moon Gate entrance. Our plan was to hike up the hill and take the train down.
We trekked for about 45 minutes before we realised we were lost. None of us had a compass.
We conferred among ourselves and decided to keep walking to the top. This was easier said than done as we kept walking around in circles and were getting nowhere.
Tired and hungry, we rationed what little food and water we had and rested for a while. We must have dozed off, because we all awoke with a start when Ramm started screaming. A python was slithering up his leg!
For a while we stood there paralysed. Then, Brandon grabbed a bamboo pole and started beating the python with all his might.
The reptile slithered into the undergrowth. We got Ramm back on his feet and was relieved that he was OK; just a little shaken.
Now where was Joel and Zaim? They had bolted! We called out to them and heard a voice from above. They were in a tree! We had a good laugh over Joel and Zaims bravery!
Just then, we heard voices in the distance. They came from a foreign couple. We told them we were lost, and they kindly guided us down the hill. The next time we go hiking, we will make it a point to hire a guide.
